Are they similar to JDS in that they're primarily a component manufacturer or are we talking complete systems more like Ciena? (By the way I'm no tech guru so this could be a little offbase). I'm curious as to how much competition this means for JDS. To this point, I've never really been able to get a firm handle on who the competition really is.

Cambrian Systems does DWDM for the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN). Ciena claims to have products for that space but they're more known for their long-haul systems.

A fund manager I met at the AEA conference phoned yesterday and asked me to compare Osicom with Cambrian, so I quickly emailed a good friend in the industry and got the following, which may help:

[Osicom focuses on the enterprise space.]

[Their product] is not a C.O. Class Box (NMBS compliance etc.)

Not a Ring architecture but Point to Point thus limiting
survivability

Not protocol and bit rate independent.

Most importantly, Both the OCI (the optical interface card to the CPE equipment, i.e. Router, SONET etc) and the Laser detector card are one of the same card. In a nut shell, the Laser detector card map the traffic to a specific WaveLength. Each card is "tuned" for only one specific W/L and cannot be changed . . . "

[The big downside here is Sparring. Osicom needs to spare for each LD of the spectrum and Cambrian doesn't.]

The other competitor is Lucent but there I've been told Cambrian's products are further along the development cycle. Again, speaking of MAN products only.

There's also Pirelli, but I have to admit I don't know if they do MAN. Perhaps someone else does.

JDS Fitel is a great way to play the technology without having to decide who's winning. I've held all my shares and probably won't touch them for years. This industry is just learning to walk.

Later --
