Bug - Re: "why will the money be spent on computers rather than software fixes? "

Many software "fixes" will be intractable. Old COBOL code running on older computers may not be "fixed" in time because COBOL programmers aren't exactly flowing out of the universities.

In a lot of cases, the source code may not even exist - or may not be "understandable" enough to decipher and fix.

Thus, new software IS THE SOLUTION - But NEW SOFTWARE is designed to run on NEW HARDWARE !

Ergo, New PCs and servers are being specified as part and parcel of the "Y2K solution".

Re: "if i'm an office manager, why would i buy my assistant
anything more than a p200 for $200-400 "

If you hire people who don't know how to utilize the best in technology, you are hiring the wrong kind of people. So buy your assistant a cheapo PC - the money you save may help keep your business afloat a little longer until your competitors put you out of business.

Because there are always smart competitors who hire smart people who DO KNOW HOW to make use of technology to improve productivity, products and processes - eventually leaving YOUR business in the dust.

Companies who are fast on their feet will succeed and slow companies will get left behind. Get used to watching your competitor's tail lights.
