Richard

"PS most software will still run on a 486, but you won't catch me doing it."

For what it is worth, I totally agree with you. I'm have a 2 1/2 yr. old Pentium 166 with 16 megs of core memory. I just helped a friend of mine(without any computer knowledge or experience) purchase a first time system. She wanted something that wouldn't be obsolete in 6 mo.<VBG> I picked a PII 350 meg with 64 megs of core memory. an 8 meg video card, an 8.5 meg hard drive, amongst other sundry accessory's, for under $1300.

Believe me this SOB screams. I will have to go back and time it, but I would almost bet that it loaded MS-Word in under 2 seconds.

It has me slobbering like one of Pavlov's dog's when the bell rings.

Regards
GB

PS It also has a 100 meg bus

At work, I have a flavor-of-the-week box. New, fast and lovely. Yet I'm totally satisfied with my free (corporate castoff) 486 at home. It does everything I need, as fast as I need it.

If cable or faster connections from home get affordable -- then maybe I'll put up a web server, just for fun. Until then, I'll keep my money and have some very, very nice dinners out. By the time I can afford fast internet access, a nice server will be, what, $250?

See you in the funny papers,

mb

Richard, agreed. Even as mundane a task as defragging goes so much faster with a fast computer. I remember having to wait what was definitely minutes while Word Perfect for Windows generated pages to print. Now, I do it in the background, in seconds. Let me also put in a plug for my HP Laserjet 4000 printer, I LOVE it so much! 17 pages a minute. It is a true workhorse. Worth every penny. (No I don't have stock in Corel, Microsoft or HWP).
