France To Wrap Up Sales Of Thomson Multimedia Stakes Nov. 30

Dow Jones Online News, Thursday, November 19, 1998 at 10:37

PARIS -(Dow Jones)- Finance Minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn said Thursday that the sale of 30% of state-owned consumer-electronics group Thomson Multimedia to four partners will be finalized around Nov. 30.
In July, Thomson Multimedia received government approval for the sale of four equal 7.5% stakes to French telecommunication equipment supplier Alcatel (ALA), Japanese computer maker NEC Corp. (NIPNY), U.S. software titan Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) and DirectTV, a unit of General Motors Corp.'s (GM) Hughes Electronics subsidiary.
The sale of the stakes will be part of wider agreements, involving technical, industrial and financial cooperation, the Finance Ministry said earlier this month.
The cooperation agreement signed with Alcatel is aimed at developing digital network technologies, the ministry said, while the DirectTV pact involves new-generation television decoders and digital television.
The deal with Microsoft targets the development of interactive television services and of products related to the Internet via television. The fourth agreement, with NEC, involves common research and development of DVD-ROM and plasma screen products, the ministry said.

Bertrand, haven't seen anything on Southern Cross, but I'll keep my eyes open. In the meantime, how about this Thomson Multimedia aquisition? Other partners are NEC, Microsoft and Digital TV. Sure sounds like it has potential. I don't know how anyone could even begin to attempt forward looking fundamental analysis on this company. Short of US markets deciding to nosedive for whatever reason, I think ALA may be about ready to move on to that 25 level. Can't give you any particular reason, other than it feels like it's ready to move up to me.

Good luck.
