Extract from Morgan Stanley/M Edelstone report on NMGC from Comdex:

< Notebook PC Demand Is Strong And NeoMagic's Roadmap Remains Compelling.

NeoMagic reported a large positive earnings surprise in the October quarter, and the company shipped more than two million notebook PC graphics controllers to surpass 50% market share for the first time. We believe near-term demand is strong, NeoMagic's January quarter is front-end loaded, and we believe the company has now shipped more than 10 million units since its inception.

NeoMagic showed demos of NMG 6 at COMDEX, and NMG 7 should begin sampling next Spring. We believe these new products should enable the company to continue to gain market share during the next year or so. More important, the company remains focused on using its leading-edge embedded memory design capabilities and know-how to diversify its product line into multimedia-based products for mobile applications, such as DVD drives and digital cameras>.

I bought the Toshiba Portege 3015 earlier this week. I also looked closely at the Sony ultra slim notebook that is about the same size as the Toshiba. These are truly amazing computers. For just under $2,000 and weighing less than 3 lbs., the Toshiba is about 3/4" thick yet packs a 266 MMX Pentium, 32 mb RAM, a 4.3 gig hard drive, an active matrix screen, a USB port, two PC Card Type II slots, a lithium battery (I'm getting over 3 hrs. on one charge), and a whole lot more. And of course, NeoMagic is inside.

Although the Sony system has been out for a couple of months, the Toshiba just started showing up in my area on Sunday. In fact, I bought the first one at my local Best Buy.

These ultra slim notebooks are the future. They don't cost much more than the heavier, older generation notebooks yet pack all of the same features (with the exception of an internal CD ROM drive -- although you can use an external drive.) To my knowledge, NeoMagic has the only practical multimedia solution for these systems, given its small footprint and low power consumption. Thus, as the ultra slims push aside the larger notebooks, NeoMagic's dominant market share will only increase. Plus, I suspect that NeoMagic can charge a premium for ultra slim systems because there really is no competition.

Anyway, that's my report from the front lines.

Still long and loving it!
