The search technique failed to turn up the column in question, however, I'll respond without "benefit" of the original piece. Minature devices like receivers, PDAs without bright displays, audio players, etc. might not need much power, however, transmitters and bright displays are using their batteries to provide light and RF radiation. Conservation of energy dictates that you're going to have to get that power from somewhere. I suggest LiPoly batteries ;-)
