I agree with the first paragraph but have concerns about the second. DELL has relatively small R&D expenses which has allowed it to excel based almost entirely on efficient operations (which is uncommon among high tech companies). Till now, it was mostly INTC's R&D that DELL benefited from but MSFT's plays a role as well. If they had to write the O/S (for example) as well as build the machines (as CPQ does outside of Windows) I think that will adversely affect their business model. I may be wrong.
