Las Vegas' Premier Hotel and Casino Chooses Dell to Run Business-Critical Applications November 17, 1998 10:02 AM EST LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 1998-- Dell PowerEdge Servers and PowerVault Storage Helps Bellagio Provide World-Class Service Around the Clock From the back office to the casino floor, Dell Computer Corporation's (Nasdaq: DELL) servers and storage systems are helping power the business-critical functions of the Bellagio, the just-opened $1.6 billion Las Vegas resort owned by Mirage Resorts Incorporated. Running everything from guest registration and a database tracking the uniforms of the hotel's 9,600 employees, to a paperless human resources department, Dell's enterprise-class systems drive the critical applications and control the data center of one of the world's largest resorts, said Glenn Bonner, chief information officer for Mirage Resorts Incorporated. "Dell's highly reliable PowerEdge(R) server and PowerVault(tm) storage systems offer the performance and availability for us to develop a computing infrastructure that helps ensure thousands of customers an unparalleled experience every second of the day," said Bonner. "We had a small window to get the latest technology installed before our opening, and Dell was the first to market with the NT-based servers and storage systems we really needed." Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), the world's leading direct computer systems company, has provided support for the Bellagio's installation of quad-processor PowerEdge 6300 servers with Intel(R) 400MHz Pentium II Xeon processors, and a mix of 40 Dell PowerEdge 2200 and PowerEdge 2300 workgroup-level servers. The Bellagio is built on a highly secure and highly scalable computing architecture in a client/server and thin-client environment. Dell PowerEdge 6300 servers run Microsoft(R) Terminal Server and Citrix(R) Metaframe(tm) to pool applications for Wyse(R) Winterm terminals and Dell OptiPlex(R) desktops, and also to run the Bellagio's 190 printers. Dell engineers also helped the Bellagio roll out one of the first fully configured PowerEdge 6300 servers clustered with Dell's PowerVault 650F fibre channel storage, enhancing reliability and easing the strain on the Bellagio's network by helping control the flow of information from within the data center. Dell PowerEdge 6300 and PowerEdge 2300 servers power many of the more than 80 applications running across the company's network, and combined provide the high-availability features the Bellagio requires. "We look at our architecture as the ultimate stress test for workgroup-level servers," said Bonner, who runs Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 on Dell PowerEdge 6300 servers. These applications store all the hotel's guest information, while other PowerEdge 2300 servers run the Bellagio's Property Management System, providing support to the front desk for guest check-in and check-out. Dell PowerEdge servers are also used to support the casino floor, powering the terminals that allow employees to instantly process credit requests. Microsoft SQL server on Dell PowerEdge 6100 servers have also enabled the Bellagio to pilot new hiring procedures, processing and qualifying applications based on responses. Where there were once employment lines of thousands of people, today prospects are efficiently scheduled and can key information into a Dell OptiPlex desktop, creating an efficient, paperless process. Ranked No. 125 among the Fortune 500 companies and No. 363 in the Fortune Global 500, Dell Computer Corporation is the world's leading direct computer systems company, based on revenues of $16.8 billion for the past four quarters. Dell designs, manufactures and customizes products and services to customer requirements and offers an extensive selection of software and peripherals.
