Yup, all true. I speak "un petite peu", enough to get around adequately. However, if you don't speak it well, the French can't stand you. They hate speaking English (even if they can) and despise those who don't speak their language well. I once asked a Parisian "quelle heure est il?" and received a blank stare, almost verging on hate. He then turned around, spoke to his partner in French. Then, barely loud enough for me to hear he said "fucking Americans".
