As a developer of storage software for both tape and optical... The ability to flexibly segment the tape into region that can be indevidualy overwritten is a huge technical advantage. That is if the storage software supports it. One of the problems of having unique feature is getting people to adopt a practice that other vendors do not have. To get the most out of the segmentation option you would design your tape filesystem around the ability. This would of course make your product incompatible with the majority of other products. Not always a good tradoff. Just my thoughts...
