Cisco Signs Cooperation Accord with
Taiwan's III

Taipei, Nov. 19 (CNA) Cisco, the world's largest producer of computer
networking equipment, announced Thursday a plan to work with Taiwan
companies to develop next-generation Internet access technologies.

Cisco Vice Chairman Garry Daichendt on Wednesday signed an agreement with
Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry (III) on co-sponsoring the
establishment of a laboratory in Taiwan to develop asymmetric digital
subscriber line (ADSL) technology.

ADSL modems provide instant high-speed data communication connections
for Internet access, video conferencing, remote access and multimedia
applications. The modems operate across existing copper telephone
lines.

Vice Economic Affairs Minister Yin Chi-ming and Industrial Development
Bureau Director-General Wang Ya-kang joined Daichendt to jointly
preside over the agreement-signing ceremony.

Executives from 10 Taiwan companies, including First International
Computer, Telcom Data Systems, CIS Technology, Universal Scientific
Industrial and Silicon Integrated Systems, attended the ceremony.
