MILPITAS, Calif. — DVD players expected to hit the Chinese market by the end of the year will be designed around a DVD decoder chip made by LSI Logic Corp., the company said Wednesday (Nov. 18).

The design win gives LSI Logic a leg up in the emerging Chinese DVD market, which is expected to take off around the time of the 1999 Chinese new year celebration in February.

Sichuan New Tech Digital Equipment Corp., a startup based in Shendu and backed by the Sichuan provincial government, selected LSI Logic's system-on-a-chip decoder for its entry into the DVD player market, according to LSI Logic. The company's DVD players will be compatible with China's large installed base of older players based on the video CD standard, the partners said.

China's video CD player market is expected to grow to almost 20 million units in 1998. With a boost from the government, Chinese VCD manufacturers plan to start volume production of DVD players in time for Christmas and the 1999 Chinese new year seasons.

The China Audio Industries Association (Shanghai, China), a group that works with LSI Logic and other U.S. chip makers, including C-Cube Microsystems and ESS Technology, projects that the Chinese DVD market will hit 2.5 million players by 2000.

As a result of the deal with LSI Logic, Chen Shi Ping, president of Sichuan New Tech Digital Equipment, said his company would speed up its final testing and validation process to ensure volume production of DVD players by the end of the calendar year.
