There is no reason why AMPS need to continue to be expensive. The network infrastructure has been paid for.

In thinly populated areas, you are right. But in more densly populated metropolitan areas, there will be more pressure to provide incentives for consumers to trade in their analog phones for digital.

BAM is claiming 6x to 8x increase of available digital minutes over analog. The pricing of a minute of the air time has to have some relation to the cost or scarcity of the spectrum. Therefore, I don't see an reason for cellular providers to drop per minute rates to AMPS customers (at least in metropolitan areas).

Don't higher data rates increase network capacity and voice quality which means it's not simply a question of applications or bragging rights? .....lay-Dave..
