The split will be effective on or around January 4th for holders of record (doesn't really mean anything) of Dec. 18th. There is a good possibility that this information was already leaked to Amazon's favorites - in fact how could the investment bankers, and therefore the analyst community fail to know about this in advance? it had to be worked through the brokerages. This is likely one reason why the stock sold off so much this afternoon - soon there is going to be a great increase in the number of shares in float - more shares chasing the previously bottled-up demand.
