This was exactly the strategy behind CPQ's creation of the Presario brand in '94.

Not quite. What you really want is that the name Compaq not be associated with one of the brands. If IBM were to purchase Gateway, Gateway computers would continue to have their own fictional separate identities and would be marketed to a different segment than IBM currently aims at, or IBM would reposition its target market. "Twinning" in automobiles (Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable) is an example of this kind of thing.
