Bill:

<<Only for businesses. Residences, ADSL's primary market, do not use T1 lines.>>

Correct. I was lazy and didn't want to get into all the different flavors of xDSL.

<<The PC modems will all work under different standards, since there is no uniformity of service.>>

Correct but I don't think it matters. If consumers start buying PCs with xDSL modems of any flavor and then find out their local telco doesn't offer the service, they'll start complaining to their PSCs. The end result being action by the telco or a forced rate cut.

What I hope doesn't happen is eager consumers buy a PC with ADSL modem and find their local telco ofers an incompatible variant. The telcos already made that screwup with ISDN. I hope they don't do it again.

By the way, ISPs can also offer xDSL service directly to the residential subscriber. It's done using what's called a "dry pair". A dry pair is phone wire with no electronics from one end to the other. It may pass through a telco office but doesn't touch telco equipment. Telcos were happy to provide such connections for burglar alarm wire and local area data circuits however, they have gone to the courts to keep ISPs from using dry pairs for offering xDSL. I don't know what the current status is of the litigation but I don't see the telcos winning.

froland.

Bill, I recall at one time we had talked about the market for AWRE's technology. Did we conclude whether it would be found in the CO?
