I remember when unix was born. Talk about Sun versus MSFT on java, all the unix groupies hared of in ten different directions with the task to make their version proprietary so they could sell at a premium price. It is a tribute to unix that is survived.
Now we have an evolutionary modus and those whose distributions are not used starve and the well fed ones prosper. The cling to x-windows is retrograde(IMO) and it's freeness is outweighed by it's problems. A friend of mine is trying to raise funds for good GUI, pay some 1000 or so programmers in India or Pakistan and make an open gui and give it away. Altruists? anyone.
HP was one of the unix proprietary schemers. Still trying.
I have played with the linux netscape and it crashes often, especially at mail time.
