this was the one where smack was being shipped home in the body bags of dead GIs

No, no, that was freelance, undocumented, and very likely myth. I'm talking about the dealings with tribal groups in Laos and Cambodia, for whom poppy was (and likely still is) a traditional crop. They didn't like the communists and made excellent mercenaries, so the CIA worked closely with them for many years. Part of the cooperation involved supplying aircraft for carrying crops, providing protection from other interested agencies, and allegedly arranging buyers, which probably (IMO) was false, as it would probably not have been necessary. The whole affair caused a very well publicized spat between the DEA and CIA, who are not on very good terms even now. The origin of these operations is easy to spot - secret slush funds are rarely sufficient to accomplish desired ends, and drugs are an abundant source of cash that needn't be accounted for before Congress. The short-term logic is overwhelming, and spooks are not known for long-term thinking.

All very tedious. I wonder why you seem to find the paranoia of the left so much odder than the equal and opposite paranoia of the right? They seem to me to complement each other perfectly.

I worked with Oliver Stone once, and was in pretty close contact with him for a few months. Very strange guy, though very talented. I could tell some stories...
