Re: "3) If an AMD VP makes a flat out statement that the K7 FPU will be 2x as fast as any other x86 CPU out there, then the claim has to be taken seriously. If he was lying, AMD would be legally obligated to make a correction. Now, it may be true that the K7 will show 2x faster FPU performance for SOME applications but not others, but even if this is the case this still indicates that the K7 represents a dramatic improvement in FPU performance over current x86 CUs."

You know, it wouldn't surprise me if this turns out to be the case. Again it calls for clarification of the question; Faster at what? AMD has deliberately left this unanswered. If it turns out that the K7 is the fastest processor in the world at blasting mutant aliens (TM EPHUD '98) in dos mode under OS2 2.1, AMD can say their claims were correct. Now I don't expect AMD to pull that trick, but it would still be nice to get them to clarify their statement. Faster FPU is possible and it would backup their claim. It would make the K7 an attractive choice for some applications. Intel has put a lot of effort into speeding up their integer unit and perhaps placed less emphasis on the FPU. Time will tell.

In addition, Wu said, there are now signs that results in the normally sluggish first quarter could be higher than the fourth, a reversal of the usual trend. "It's increasingly likely Intel will have a first quarter that's better than the fourth,
because of the Katmai release and new products from PC makers after Christmas,'' Wu said, adding that the Katmai chip is due to be unveiled on February 28.
