ahh, first of all, your time frame appears to be during the biggest bull market in history where valuations have utterly disconnected from reality. secondly, my job as an investor is to value companies. thirdly, if you buy b/c a stock goes up then you NEVER know when to sell.

i value a company and buy into it. if the price drops, i revalue the company and, all else being equal, buy into it. i do this one or two more times and then i'm through.

if it goes up i let it ride until mr market values it higher than i do and i sell in a similar fashion. if the fundamentals, as i see them, change, then all bets are off.

many, many stocks run up and right back down again. asnd, presstek, iomega, mu, boston chicken, etc ad nauseum. that is one way to lose a lot of money - unless you are lucky. look back at an s&p guide or other such guide in the 1960s. many don't exist the companies don't exist. they went up and then went to zero.

in any case, it is a different view and that makes this game interesting.

good luck.
