Loose Change

More net stocks: Online designer clothes shop Bluefly
flew up (too cute, I know) 3 7/16 points, to $11 5/16,
on news of a marketing deal with Lycos. Bluefly must
have visited an image consultant or something. It
changed its name (used to be Pivot Rules) and its
identity (used to sell golf stuff). Sometimes all you
need is a good makeover.... And like everyone else with
a brain, I think all these Internet stocks are
ridiculous. Their values are built on negotiations that
were hatched in some latte bar in Palo Alto. Jimmy
Rogers had it right when he said last week on CNBC's
Squawk Box that the best way to play the Internet is to
buy Dell. You need a computer to get onto the Internet,
right?... Solly downgraded three airlines today....
Here's something I've noticed lately, the list of
downgrades has been longer than upgrades. And there are
also more neutrals and holds than I've seen in a while.
Did the down market give analysts more freedom to be
negative? Or are fundamentals slightly worse? Hmmm. I
wonder.... Saw a charming Tiffany's ad this morning.
Heavy on the cheese, but still very well done. Speaking
of TIF, a bit of a management chang over on Fifth Ave.
President Mike Kowalski will take over as CEO for
William Chaney.
