COMDEX Keynote: Intel blew it and "some heads should roll" The billing for the various COMDEX Keynotes appears in the 44-page booklet sent to all enrolled for COMDEX Fall 98. On page 5 a clip for Craig Barrett, President and CEO Intel Corporation appear and I quote: Craig Barrett President and CEO Intel Corporation TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17 As Intel's new CEO, Craig Barrett will be addressing the COMDEX audience for the first time. He will be outlining his vision for Intel and the computer industry, and demonstrating the core technologies and applications that will shape the use of computers beyond the end of the decade. As Intel's fourth leader and a renowned technologist, Dr. Barrett will describe how Moore's Law underpins his premise that sustainable industry growth can only be based upon new technologies and new products. In that light, will discuss the technologies Intel sees as providing a basis for new product innovation and the application environments through the end of the decade. Dr. Barrett joined Intel Corporation in 1974 as a Technology Development Manager. He was named a Vice President of the corporation in 1984, promoted to Senior Vice President in 1987 and Executive Vice President in 1990. Dr. Barrett was elected to Intel Corporation's Board of Directors in 1992 and was named the company's Chief Operating Officer in 1993. He became Intel's fourth President in May 1997, and Chief Executive Officer in 1998. Dr. Barrett heads the U. S. Department of Commerce's Semiconductor Technology Council, and is a member of the Boards of Directors for the U. S. Semiconductor Industry Association, Sematech, Pandesic LLC and Komag Corporation (a hard disk supplier). The above billing for the Intel Keynote speech sounds great, but that is not what took place. Instead Bill Maher took charge of the other 4 members on the panel and gutter level dialogue was the order of the day. I failed to count the number of times Clinton and Monica Lewinsky's name was mentioned. Ditto for words like “jacking off”. Sexual “funnies” very sprinkled liberally throughout the one hour session. Very little technical information was offered. Dr. Barrett tried hard to rescue the situation, but he was only one voice out of five and not the moderator in charge. If Intel paid any money to panel moderator Mr. Bill Maher, I feel the responsible “idiots” for hiring him should be paying the bill out of his or her own pocket. Better yet, the person(s) should be fired! Piously humble carl has spoken
