RSD,

>>If fastest no longer makes a difference, why isn't the world run by PCs? Why can't MSFT run Hotmail with NT? Are we just talking about desktops? Isn't it curious that IBM is shipping around 2X the previous year's mainframe MIPs? <<

You make a good point, but let's take a closer look.

1) World run by PCs - I could make a case that that is already happening, especially for those who run their companies alone and their 'trusty' PC. As for the 'huge' companies, the PCs are connected to a mainframe, in many cases for ease of software maintenance, ie easier to upgrade the 'host software' vs. 25,000 remote terminals. This doesn't even consider those IS/IT managers that want to 'control the universe'.

2) As for the Hotmail discussion - the NT computers WILL eventually be able to run that, whether it is a faster CPU or optimized software, I don't know what the answer will be.

3) As for IBM shipping 2X MIPs over last year, that can actually be accomplished by doubling the clock speed, and in PCs that happens every year, it seems!

JMHO - however!

Ken
