It just won't go away. Briefing:

CIENA CORP. (CIEN) 17 15/16 +1 7/8. Speculation over when this maker of telecommunications equipment might be acquired seems to be running rampant again as the stock tacks on gains ahead of the weekend.

While its inability to land lucrative contracts in the past few months are well documented and one of the major reason why its merger deal with Tellabs was torpedoed, speculation remains high of a takeover. Just this week, a CIENA official did not provide a very rosy outlook for the company as senior vice president for strategy and corporate development Steve Chaddick said that it foresaw a couple of difficult quarters ahead.

Nonetheless, despite this very cautious outlook, investors have continued to climb back on-board on the believe that the company is likely to find a suitor sooner rather than later as many speculate that CIENA cannot survive on its own. In fact, many suspect that Tellabs (TLAB 54 3/16 -3/16) could again emerge as an interested party if CIENA is willing to consider a lower offer. Also, Cisco Systems (CSCO 73 7/8 +9/16) is said to be an interested party, although no one from the Cisco camp has made any comments regarding this possibility.

Since mid-October, when the stock bottomed at $8 1/8, the stock has more than doubled in price on buyout rumors. In fact, the stock tends to spike upwards on Friday's on the assumption that if a deal is forthcoming it will be announced right after the weekend.

David, Cramer must not have eaten his Cheerios or something. Tellabs & Cisco don't even have competing products, do they??
