It sure does'nt make sense, especially after the Intel news yesterday. Sorry if its been posted before, but I want everyone to know the downgrade is BS. Intel Tells Analysts 4th Quarter Looks Even Brighter Than Expected Dow Jones Online News, Thursday, November 19, 1998 at 16:33 NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Intel Corp. Chief Financial Officer Andy Bryant again painted a rosy picture for the fourth quarter, saying the semiconductor giant has seen increasing demand. Goldman Sachs & Co. analyst Joe Moore said Intel "sees a very good tone of demand," in the fourth quarter. Bryant reiterated that business strength is widespread across all microprocessor categories, as well as flash memory, networking, chipsets and graphics products, according to Moore. Bryant even said Intel has sold out of chips for the fourth quarter. Earlier this month, Intel said strong sales of personal computers world-wide would lead to better-than-expected results for the fourth quarter. That announcement followed a third quarter in which Intel beat Wall Street estimates for earnings, amid a rebound in chip demand. Analysts cited several factors, including strengthening of markets world-wide as well as Intel's ability to trim costs while taking better aim at its competitors. In a recent briefing with analysts, Intel executives outlined other initiatives that have helped the company, including a strategy unveiled last year to deploy microprocessors for specific markets rather than the old technique of letting a new chip migrate from the top of the market down. Analysts say the strategy allows Intel to better fend off competition into its strongholds in the higher end of the market, while marshaling forces to regain lost ground at retail. Intel, meanwhile, has managed to reduce costs through steps such as negotiating more favorable prices from suppliers and cutting inventories to a level that officials say is running slightly below where they would like. Efficiencies are expected to improve even more next year, officials said, as Intel prepares for an aggressive roll out of a new line of chips based on a faster manufacturing process.
