I'm sure they had to go out and get cash to buy Ciena. That's why everyone has been talkin about their recent freedom to do a stock swap. <<Lucent was noted as raising a fair amount of cash the other day for unspecified purposes.>>

Acquiring CIEN ain't going to move LU's stock price much, except if the mkt concludes that LU's own development efforts were failed. That's the best reason I can think of for *not* buying CIEN, an admission of defeat. Even if it were true, LU would probably not want to make it apparent by buying a one-trick pony.
