I guess the tough part is to figure out what which data to prefetch, which to me is difficult, if not impossible.


On the x86 as it stands it is neary (if not) impossible. However Scumbria said "CPUs" in general and I want to point out that while the x86 architecture may be limited in certain ways, there is no reason that another cpu architecture (a cleaner RISC design for example) coulnd't look ahead into an instruction stream.
