Hold on to you hats everyone! I have in my grubby little hands...

...a RIVA TNT board!!!!

I'm opening my computer case...

I'm removing the Banshee card...
(Someone STOP me!!!)

I'm inserting the TNT card...

I'm closing the computer...
(Have I lost my mind?!?!?!)

I'm writing this message. And soon I'll be testing it out to see first hand how significant this 32-bit color issue is over a long period of use.

Wish me (bad?) luck! I'll let everyone know what I learn.

Feature set woes.

I don't think Glide is the culprit responsible for 16bit color or Z buffers.

Voodoo2/Banshee/Voodoo3 are souped up Voodoo Graphics chips with the same features the original voodoo had. It's in the metal.

Rampage will surely have 32 bit color, and Glide will easily be modified to support it.

The real question for me is this: Is Rampage behind schedule? Is Voodoo3 a retail and OEM part because the rampage is late?

Here's my current thinking: They needed a 2XAGP part, and they wanted to crank it up as fast as possible. But at that point it started looking like a V2 killer, not a Banshee update. So they split the product into two models. The difference between the chips will probably be only clockspeed and memory type.

Which leaves my basic question unanswered, I guess. Does this buy them time to belatedly add 32 bit color to Rampage or something? Or are they going to release Rampage on schedule?

They need Rampage out soon because they can't be perceived by the media and developers as being light on features. Even if using 32 bit in TNT degrades performance unacceptably the press and developers are going to paste shots from their Quake Arena slideshow into their articles regardless of playability.
