David, i believe that Sam was questioning the fact that John had previously baptised Jesus and then he asks,

"2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and show John again"
Mat. 11

Below are quotes from different translations all the same verses.

Salvation does not come by works of righteousness.

"He saved us, not because of the good things we did, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins and gave us a new life through the Holy Spirit." (Titus 3:5 NLT)
"He generously poured out the Spirit upon us because of what Jesus Christ our Savior did." (Titus 3:6 NLT)
"He declared us not guilty because of his great kindness. And now we know that we will inherit eternal life." (Titus 3:7 NLT)

"he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit," (Titus 3:5 NIV)
"whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior," (Titus 3:6 NIV)
"so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life." (Titus 3:7 NIV)

"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;" (Titus 3:5 KJV)
"Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;" (Titus 3:6 KJV)
"That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life." (Titus 3:7 KJV)

"not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit," (Titus 3:5 NKJV)
"whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior," (Titus 3:6 NKJV)
"that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life." (Titus 3:7 NKJV)

"he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit." (Titus 3:5 NRSV)
"This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior," (Titus 3:6 NRSV)
"so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life." (Titus 3:7 NRSV)

"He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit," (Titus 3:5 NASB)
"whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior," (Titus 3:6 NASB)
"that being justified by His grace we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life." (Titus 3:7 NASB)

Commentary:
Titus 3:5: The ineffectiveness of human works for attaining salvation is nowhere better seen than here. God's mercy saves us, employing the agencies of regeneration and renewal. "Regeneration" means "becoming again." Here the concept has to do with personal regeneration. At the moment a man exercises repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ, he is born anew (cf. John 3:3). The Holy Spirit makes him a new creation (cf. 2 Cor. 5:17).
