Because I try not to lose money by being too greedy. I bought AMAT at 24, and have to decide when to sell. If this is as good as it will get for awhile, maybe I should sell now, and not be too greedy! Get back in later, after the current euphoria lifts. Sure, that's timing to a degree, but the other way to make money in semi-equips is to avoid the extremes. Even AMAT is saying the industry growth long-term is now going to be 20% or less. If one can sell near the highs, buy near the lows (even the intermediate highs and lows), use LEAPS, etc., I think a 40% annual return on investments in this sector is quite attainable.
