Here's a challenge for all you computer gurus out there.

I have this intermittent problem with my sound card. When I boot, the MS tune plays (so the card's fine)and I hear a series of "pops" as various desktop icons are loading. If I don't hear those "pops" until everything has loaded, I know that I have a problem. What's the problem - well, if I try to play a Real Audio sound clip or any sound for that matter, I get a message that says something like "Cannot play requested file - sound card is already engaged."

I talked to the sound card manufacturer and they couldn't help (thanks for the tip, David Lawrence.)

So something in the boot-up process is taking over my sound card. I say that it's an intermittent problem because every now and then during boot-up, it will "pop" right to the end and then I know that my sound card hasn't been hijacked.

Anyone with a similar problem?
