Yes, the DOJ has its story confused. But come on Rudedog, altering the 'bits'? That makes it sound a lot more technical and dangerous than it really is. It wasn't quite what was in the headlines, but it's not quite how Microsoft portrayed it either.

We're talking about removing an icon from the screen. Yes, that could be described as altering the 'bits' or the 'product', but it was an ICON. And let's assume that Microsoft was going to just terminate the contract for that one line. It's still a pretty naked demonstration of power, and the lack of control OEMS have over the products which they sell. As in, if the OEMs want to sell computers to people with the Microsoft operating system, they have to let Microsoft use the computer as an advertisement for their internet products.

No, they didn't put a gun to Compaq's head, they just threatened to cut off a pinkie. Still hurts.
