Very nice post, Joan. It may be simplistic, but my view is that not impeaching Bill Clinton will in the long run do much more harm to the country than the short term "distraction" of an impeachment trial.

If we "allow" such a high profile political figure by using the trappings of his office to "declare war" on an equal branch of government, the judicial branch, then I fear that we have taken a giant leap toward an imperial presidency that our forefathers so diligently labored in thought and deeds to prohibit.

If we really believe that lying under oath is not an impeachable offense because of the "subject matter", sexual harassment, then we should be honest enough to recognize that as a culture we give no real credence to the legal concept of sexual harassment as actionable offense and should change our laws regarding same. We simply cannot have it both ways as a country and expect it not further corrode our notions of justice.

jbe, I believe you are right. I do tend to lump Borzou and yourself together as Democrats. I apologize for that. At times I probably let my emotions regarding the sad nature of politics today get the better of me.

I am genuinely concerned regarding the negative effect allowing a President to get away with perjury will have on our country. The rule of law should be protected and cherished in a Democracy. I can't remember a time when it's been so calously tossed aside in favor of political expediency.

Allowing double standards of conduct like this, is akin to separating the people from the King and his court. I had hoped our country was better than this. It's not like the country would crumble or something if we allowed Al Gore to be President. Bill Clinton is just NOT that important to so thoroughly desecrate our institutions of law and order over.
