Idall's (Adall's) massive VCD advertising campaign..........
chinadaily.net

<<News of the only national television station, at 7 pm, and the national weather forecast that follows after a short
commercial break, are the only routine programmes picked up by almost all television stations nationwide.

Thus advertising during the brief break is the most expensive and believed to be the most influential in China.
*****
Adall, the famous Guangdong-based VCD (video compact disc) manufacturer, won the so-called "king of bids" with 37
million yuan (US$4.5 million) last Sunday, grasping the right for the 5 second commercial advertisement every night in
the first quarter of 1999 immediately after the 7 pm news, Beijing Morning Post reported.

In 1997, Adall got the title with 210 million yuan (US$25.3 million) for a full year advertisement right, which means an
average, that year, of 50.25 million yuan (US$6 million) per season, 1.5 million yuan more than this year's bid.

"Heike" in Chinese means "hacker." OT humor...........
chinadaily.net

Excerpt:

<<On the evening of the sixth day after the incident, the CSS members and the local police went to his home, when he was
still online.

Without too much persuasion, [Ouch!! Even the words hurt!!] Xiao Sui confessed after hearing that they were from Jiangxi Province.

He admitted to a total of four illegal intrusions into the 169 net in Jiangxi Province.

He also confessed that he had added on a user and rebooted the host after trying several instructions in vain. "Then I
changed the net administrator's password and shut down the host," he said to Chen.

He admitted it was from the Internet that he had downloaded a hackers' textbook and this May started to attack
different nets.

When asked why he did it, his answer was simple -- for fun.

But the cost was a 24-hour-long failure of the net and more than 300 users being denied access to it.

Xiao Sui was taken into police custody immediately for his alleged illegal entry and destruction of the net and taken to
Jiangxi three days later.

His anguished parents could only face up to their son's wrongdoing and the new word heike, the Chinese word for
hacker.

His father has visited his son four times in Nanchang where he is being held while his mother is yet to recover from the
shock.

She said that they bought him a computer a year ago to help him in his studies, but never expected him to be a hacker.

"We have supervised his surfing online several times to make sure he doesn't play too many video games," she said,
sighing, "But we just didn't know what heike meant at that time." >>
