rich, i wasn't buying amat when sales were strong ;-) anyway, the btb is is a ratio and can be misleading. for example, amat could book $2 and bill $1. is the btb good, yes. i don't think i need to explain the rest ;-)

hey, what are amat's sales now vs their high? now compare the stock price to its high.

i also disagree that business NOW is a trailing indicator. it is the current indicator. like it or not, what happens NOW does impact the future.

amzn and amat do have one thing in common - the point i was trying to illustrate - speculation. granted, the level of speculation for amzn is much more. that doesn't mean amat isn't a speculation stock. the current buyers are not investing, imho. rather, they are speculating (gambling... hence the vegas reference).

ps - i think we just disagree about amat's 1-2 year business future. that's ok. it will be interesting to see it work out...

business is bad. let me ask you. did you expect amat to pop 50% with business in its current state (losing money, right?). just curious.

if dram companies losing money after an "upturn" is good then wall street is, shall we say nicely, optimistic ;-)
