Compaq's initial explosive entry into the PC marketplace was due to IBM's inability to meet demand. This was long before 386 days.

The product was a portable PC which was put together with erector set components, and was physically larger than a modern workstation.

Gotta agree with this. Back in the 8088 days you had the choice of RGB or TTL mono monitors. Then CPQ brought out the 'luggable' with video adapter that would actually run CGA and give you the nice crisp monospaced TTL style fonts. I remember this as one of those "WOW...why doesn't anybody else do this" moments.
