Paul,

IBM DID TAKE the x86 business SERIOUSLY ! That's why they cut the deal with Apple and Motorola to make the PowerPC !

If they thought x86 was going to be around for a while, they would have put the 400 engineers at Somerset to work designing a few x86 processors, instead of those silly PPC things. The architects at IBM were convinced that x86 was headed for a rapid death.
