Netscape Stock Gains Before Earnings Report
By Amy Rogers, Computer Reseller News
Nov 20, 1998 (5:21 PM)
After a roller-coaster week on Wall Street, Netscape is scheduled to announce its fourth-quarter earnings on Monday. First Call projects a gain of 4 cents per share for the quarter ended Oct. 31, and a loss of 61 cents per share for the fiscal 1998.
Industry watchers said published reports that executives from Netscape and America OnLine were in talks to embed Netscape's browser into AOL's service may have been a key reason why Netscape's stock shot up to 44 Wednesday, near its 52-week high of 45 1/4.
Shares of Netscape [NSCP] closed Friday up 2 5/8 at 39 3/16. AOL [AOL] stock gained 1 1/2 to 84 7/8.
Neither company would comment on the reports. A Netscape spokeswoman pointed out that the two companies have worked together on a number of deals. "They are a company that we talk to on an ongoing basis," she said.
Earlier this month, AOL and Netscape said that AOL's Digital City feature will be accessible on Netscape's Netcenter site.
Microsoft's Internet Explorer has been AOL's default browser since 1996, but that contract is due to expire on Jan. 1, 1999. That deadline, plus the ongoing antitrust trial against Microsoft, could be prompting Netscape to seize the moment, industry watchers said.
