Didn't understand that this was a descriptive and not metaphorical phrase - most people in the business would take that to mean the clones built out of spot products, where the only thing the 'manufacturer' adds is the logo.

I worked on a lot of those early CPQ machines too - we were replacing DEC Lab-11 data acquisition gear with CPQ machines in a lot of industrial applications in 1983-84. The CPQs had better heat and shock specs than the supposedly 'ruggedized' PDP-11's.
