Cabletron Rises on Optimism for Sales of New Products

Rochester, New Hampshire, Nov. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Cabletron
Systems Inc. shares rose 6.9 percent, climbing for a third day, after
two reports said the company is gaining market share with its newest
computer-networking products.

Cabletron rose 7/8 to 13 9/16 in trading of 2.88 million. The shares
have gained 17 percent since Tuesday.

Cabletron said Wednesday that market researcher Dell'Oro Group reported
that the company more than tripled its share of the market for the
fastest computer switches in the third quarter from the second.
The company's SmartSwitch router, acquired with startup Yago
Systems Inc. in March, has outperformed products from rivals Cisco
Systems Inc., 3Com Corp. and others in independent tests.

''They're making good progress with the Yago products,'' said Bill
Becklean, an analyst at Tucker Anthony Inc., who rates Cabletron
''strong buy.''

The Yago line contributed about $15 million of Cabletron's fiscal
second-quarter revenue of $370.6 million, and is expected to rise to
about $25 million in the third quarter ending this month, Becklean
said. It's Cabletron's fastest-growing product line.

Buying Yago ''was the key to getting this company turned around,''
Becklean said.

Profit at Rochester, New Hampshire-based Cabletron has fallen for four
straight quarters.

According to Dell'Oro, Cabletron's share of the market for so-called
Layer-3 modular switches rose to 32.8 percent in the third quarter
from 8.7 percent in the second quarter. The category includes sales of
the company's SSR 8000 and SSR 8600 models, said Dell'Oro analyst Greg
Collins.

Cabletron had the second-largest share of the market after Nothern
Telecom Ltd.'s Bay Networks unit. Bay's share, which includes sales of
its Accelar product line, fell to 38 percent in the third quarter from
70 percent in the second quarter.

Third-quarter figures from market researcher Cahners-InStat Group
also showed Cabletron gaining share, while figures for Bay and 3Com
Corp. fell, analyst Jeremy Duke said.
