Vari-L Company Awarded Two United States Patents

Breakthrough Technology Enables High-Volume, Automated Production of Advanced High-Frequency Components; Company Envisions Lower Manufacturing Costs for Commercial Product Line

DENVER, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Vari-L Company, Inc. (Nasdaq: VARL - news), a leading provider of advanced components for the wireless telecommunications industry, today announced it has been awarded two United States Patents, entitled ''Sliver Board Orthoganal Mounted Substrate Resonator'' and ''Continually Adjustable Resonator.''

Dave Sherman, president and CEO of Vari-L, said, ''The innovative technology underlying these patents allows Vari-L to manufacture high-frequency RF components, in the range of three to six gigahertz, using low-cost, commercial materials and processes while maintaining excellent performance. These components have been traditionally manufactured using expensive, labor-intensive methods and materials. This breakthrough will enable us to offer affordable Voltage Controlled Oscillators and Phase-Locked Loop Synthesizers for higher-frequency commercial wireless applications in development worldwide.

''This technology, combined with our substantial investments in high-volume, automated production capacity, creates a very powerful product offering that will be available as demand for high-frequency, low-cost RF components intensifies worldwide,'' Sherman added. ''We are extremely proud of our technical personnel for their tremendous innovation, which we are confident will position Vari-L for accelerated long-term revenue and earnings growth.''

Sherman also noted, ''This technology provides solutions to the wireless communications industry as it evolves to meet the challenges of eventual spectrum crowding and greater bandwidth demand for applications such as high-speed Internet access. In addition to making existing products more affordable, we expect our innovations to encourage the development of new applications previously regarded as cost-prohibitive.''

Vari-L serves a diverse customer base comprised of some of the world's leading technology companies, including California Microwave, Ericsson, Harris, Hughes, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Lucent Technologies, Mitsubishi, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Samsung, Siemens, Stanford Telecom and Wireless Access.
