CableNet- Will be within Western Cable..

CableNET®'98 RFP Issued; Focus on
Interoperable Services

Louisville, Colorado, June 17, 1998 -- Cable Television Laboratories, Inc., (CableLabs®) and the
California Cable Television Association (CCTA) have issued a request for proposal (RFP) for
participation in the CableNET '98 demonstration.

CableNET '98, an integrated demonstration showing the power of the cable industry's hybrid
fiber/coaxial (HFC) network, wil be on display exclusively at the Western Cable Show in Annaheim,
California, December 2-4. Additionally there is an extensive presence on the World Wide Web at
www.cablenet.org

CableNET '98 seeks to build upon the cable industry's aggressive efforts to obtain interoperable
advanced digital set-top boes under the OpenCable™ initiative. It is expected that interoperable
cable modem manufacturers and companies participating in PacketCable™ will participate as well.

The deadline for filing responses on CableNET '98 participation is July 16.

The CableNET demonstration maintains an educational approach fostered by CableLabs and the
CCTA. CableNET '98 will focus on the services and applications that cable operators may deliver
to consumers via HFC telecommunications networks.

The CableNET '98 RFP specifically seeks services, applications, hardware and software that
already are either current cable/computer industry technology, under market trial, or are no more
than one year away from deployment.

Areas of interest include new methods of digitizing video, video-on-demand, interoperable advanced
digital set-top boxes, such as those being produced under the OpenCable™ initiative; high-speed
data services using DOCSIS modems, including on-line information services and multimedia services
terminating on computers. Also of interest are Internet applications, either in software or hardware
form; delivery of telephone service, either wireline or wireless, and cable-commuting; voice over
Internet Protocol, and video-conferencing using Internet Protocol.

Other areas that organizers will consider are new Internet appliances; interactive services that
terminate on television monitors including, but not limited to, near video-on-demand and
video-on-demand; network management, advanced (digital) television, HDTV and electronic
commerce and transactions.

In addition, any contenet offering, service application or Internet appliance that offers access, that is
accessible or that is being designed to be accessible via a broadband connection to the World Wide
Web, should also consider participating in CableLabs' on-going Technology Tracking project
(www.cablelabs.com/techtrans.html). This project makes emerging technologies available to
CableLabs members on an on-going basis beyond the CableNET '98 exhibit at the Western Show.

CableLabs is a research and development consortium of cable television system operators
representing the continents of North America and South America. CableLabs plans and funds
research and development projects that will help cable companies take advantage of future
opportunities and meet future challenges in the cable television industry.

It also transfers relevant technologies to member companies and to the industry. In addition,
CableLabs acts as a clearinghouse to provide information on current and prospective technological
developments that are of interest to the cable industry. CableLabs maintains web sites at
www.cablelabs.com; www.cablemodem.com; www.cablenet.org; www.opencable.com; and
www.packetcable.com.

CCTA is the industry's largest state cable television association with over 350 members serving over
6 million customers. Western Show information may be accessed through the Association's
Web-site at www.cct-assn.org.

Hope they got all the bugs out.......

The demonstration is a focus for media and is a must see on all tours for VIPs at the show.
For instance, the CableLabs' Board of Directors, made up of CEOs of many of the leading
cable companies in North America, receives a special tour of the exhibit.
A special value to CableNET participants is the opportunity to have senior executives in
the booth at the time of this tour/cocktail reception in order to meet the CableLabs Board
of Directors as they visit CableNET. However, due to the volume of companies
participating in the CableNET , there is no guarantee that every participating vendor will
meet with a CableLabs board member. Participating CableNET companies each will be
able to purchase five tickets at $50 each for this reception. This is an exclusive offer to
CableNET participants only and tickets must be paid for in advance.

Reread that list of CableNet participants and have decided that CUBE's
project is one of the most ambitious on the list. The most participants attempting integration of their expertise. If the new chip can deliver the right look on the screen it could create a beeline across the aisle to CUBE's booth. Hope they have all the glitches out.

The Yhoo SFA thread is all over the place trying to figure who their partner will be.

A recent post there says that Paul Allen owns all of AVIO

SFA wants the excitement to build. Check out their homepage....

The teaser; Announcing a new alliance with a major computer company.

So who's it 'gonna be? SUNW, Compaq, Apple, IBM, Dell, somebody else?
With the SUNW/AOL/Netscape deal and the mention of set tops in those releases they would have to be thinking.

M&A activity doesn't seem to happen nearly as much in semi's as in networking. How long till M&A activity reaches the set top? Surprises are probably in the works.

No matter who it is can CUBE sell them the AViA@TV?????

What a great seat we have in the unfolding game!
