There was a shocking story in today's Globe & Mail newspaper on how street kids in Ulan Bator live in the steam tunnels under the city. The city gets extremely cold and the kids don't have enough clothing to live above ground. When one of them wants to come out through a manhole to beg above ground, they have to pool their clothing to give than one sufficient clothing to withstand the cold. Most of those who live underground have no parents. The situation came about after the U.S.S.R./Russia cut off aid to Mongolia about 7 years ago. That aid was in part going to fund Mongolia's schools -- which was the main institution for ensuring shelter and food for the children. Now the aid is gone, many kids are left to fend for themselves. A real heart rendering story. Kids living on the very edge of existence.
