Ameritech rate hikes good news for rivals?

Today's Chicago Tribune story states "Ameritech has been raising rates it charges to business customers and competitors say that plays right into their strategy of nibbling away at those accounts." "The demand for new telecommunications service is growing faster that the new companies can sign up customers," said Robert Taylor, ce of Focal Communications Corp. So far, Ameritech's rate hikes haven't driven many business customers into the arms of the region's nearly two dozen telecommunications competitors because the new phone providers are still too small to have a noticeable effect, said Taylor. But as neew firms expand their networks and sales staffs, they will be able to serve more former Ameritech customers.

Article indicates Business rates have increased on average 20% this year. Also, article indicates that while Ameritech states they will lower business rates in future and increase residential rates, they are now increasing business rates so that they can lower in future and still receive an increase. Ameritech can raise business rates without commission approval because it has declared its commercial market competitive.

I'm excited that I am a Winstar investor. This only reinforces my opinion on the future.
