Ow!!!! I can empathize to some degree. I had a hernia, though it was too long ago to remember. More recently though, I had an appendectomy. For about a day before I went into surgery I had almost constant abdominal pain. So, did you get this particular battle scar imitating those guys on Monday Night Football or a similar athletic outing, or did it go unnoticed for a day or two when, in the middle of some situation where you have to be cool and collected, you suddenly get an excruciating stab of pain and yelp out loud. I never mentioned this too you, I think, but I took special note of your name when I first got on SI. My philosophy professor from VU last year is a big fan of Gauguin. He has framed a full size print in the hall outside his office for passing people to look at. I can't remember the name of the piece for the life of me, but he talked about it in class saying that it was about "where we've been where we are and where we're going". As for my bit on current events... (You asked for it) I'm at Purdue University enjoying being a freshman. I'm majoring in physics, and minoring in philosophy. I'm not real sure about research as a career, and industry doesn't feel appealing. Teaching sounds like my thing. (I guess I just don't care about making a huge amount of money.) My roomate is majoring in engineering (what Purdue is famous for) and I think I could do well in that, I just don't think it would satisfy me. Like I said in the last post, I'm also taking a course in the history of ancient greek philosophy which has been real interesting for me. I'm about a three hours drive from home, which is a nice distance I think. Not hard to get back home on vacation, but also no temptation to run home a bunch. Anyway, I'm rambling..... -Tom
