When you ask tech questions try getting some hardware and distribution info to us. Like what kind of monitor, what version of Linux etc.. It is awful easy to set up X and get the horizontal frequency wrong. This is in kilohertz and it the single most important spec of your monitor. Get it wrong and overdrive it by 500 herz and bye bye flyback transformer. It doesn't sound like much but it could be 500,000 pixels per second too many and that could be 1.5% overdrive, which a monitor older than 5 years will not take. Only true multisyncs can be slightly overdriven and the name multisync on the front does not actually mean that. It is a lie.(Flyback transformer will set you back about 200 beans)

Your card make and model is important too.

General questions don't work at all in X configurations. There are no real trustworthy general answers.
