Sounds great but at what refresh rate is it capable of doing this resolution? Some Monitors employ double scan when doing higher resolutions. It might interest you to know that all that resolution is wasted unless you have a monitor that has like .24 mm dot pitch and is 21 inch. Most of the advertising is a lie. The most a 19 inch monitor can do with .26 dot pitch is perhaps 1200 by 900. And the higher resolution s are too flickery and so are hard on the eyes and brain. You want at least 74 herzog vertical resolution. (frames per second) To get that in XFree86 you need a lot of stats. You just don't pick out a resolution and a refresh rate. You are going to have to know the:

1. vertical refresh rate max, 2. the megaherz bandwidth of your monitor, 3. the maximum allowable horizontal frequency, 4. the vertical sync pulse width, 5. the horizontal sync pulse width (difference in microseconds between the middle two numbers of the first 4 in your video mode lines in XF86Config) and the 6. width in pixels or microseconds of your viewable area on the screen as well as the 7. total scan width, both visible and invisible. Some values might be f'rinstance: (not your monitor!) 1.) 60 Hz 2.) 30 mhz 3.) 31.5 Khz 4.) 0.63 mu 5.) 3.8 mu 6.) 640 pix Vis. 7.) 952 pix V+I Then read Videomodes.doc in your /X11/docs directory and have fun.

Finally I think the best way for a neophyte is to get XF86Setup from the Slackware sunsite and run it. It has way of configuring card and monitor mouse etc graphically and running a program called Xvidtune that will tweak your monitor if it is the multisync kind and can take a tad of stretching the picture. I will send you complete instructions
to get the program and set it up by email if you want.

Finally you have to realize that 24 bit planes and other stuff is sometimes not set up in X for fancy cards. So beware. Your card may not even be on the XFree86 radar screen.
