The Associated Press and Infonautics Launch News Archive on the Internet

PR Newswire, Monday, November 23, 1998 at 07:45

NEW YORK, Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The Associated Press and Infonautics,
Inc. (NASDAQ:INFO) today launched a subscription-based text archive on the
Internet that offers a comprehensive database of AP news, sports and business
stories.
The archive can be found on the AP's continuously updated news Web site,
The WIRE (http://wire.ap.org), which is used by 250 AP member newspapers and
broadcasters nationwide. The archive contains stories from the AP's national
wires, going back to July 1, 1997. To manage the archive and handle commerce
transactions, the AP selected Infonautics, a leading Internet information
company and provider of online archive, research and reference services based
in Wayne, PA and New York, NY.
"Infonautics is proud to be working with The Associated Press to make
their valuable archive available over the Internet," said William Burger, Vice
President of Content and Media Services for Infonautics. "Building and
managing an archive for the largest news organization in the world presented
unique challenges that highlight the best-of-breed technology and customer
focus that our online archive solution offers. We are excited to work with
the AP as they continue to extend their reach and distribution onto the
Internet."
"An archive was the single most requested service by the members we serve
and users of The Wire," said AP Multimedia Services Director Jim Kennedy.
"They'll now have the opportunity to quickly and easily find one specific AP
story or do broad research on a topic."
The AP Archive provides paid access to Associated Press stories older than
the most recent two weeks of news. More recent stories can be accessed from
The WIRE at no charge. Archive users can select advanced search options that
allow them to search by news category, byline, date or relevance. Searches
are free and users are able to review an abstract of each article before it is
purchased. Pricing plans cover single stories, multi-story passes, a monthly
pass, an annual pass and special rates for institutions. The AP will share
revenue from the archive with its participating members.
