Ron, I confess my knowledge of Moslem belief is next to nothing. I know there is prohibition of alcohol and I merely extended that to all drugs.

I also looked up the word assassin in my old dictionary because what you said sounded familiar. It turns out it does come from the word hashish. During the Crusades, there was a secret society of Moslems who murdered Christian leaders, supposedly under the influence of hash. Khat is a leaf that has a stimulating effect. Coffee also is drunk by Moslems.

I have been going back and looking at Turkish news, not because it think is important to GRNO, but simply out of morbid fascination.

"The Moslems hate recreational drugs".
"...there is a certain tolerance for hash and Khat"
You made a good point. In many moslem regions (Uzbekistan, Tadjikistan, Turkmenistan of the former Soviet Union, as well as
in Afghanistan, Pakistan, drugs as hashish, anasha have been used in every home for centuries as a major medication to cure almost everything. Thus, California move for a partial legalization of marihuana is supported by a long time moslem experience.
Some moslem countries produce very good vines and cognacs (well, say
brandy). See also Omar Hayam, Rudaki, Hafiz.
By the way, adultery is also prohibited in the Christian world.

In the Moslem countries of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, the penalty for bringing recreational drugs into the country with intent to sell is death. I'm not certain about the status of cannabis relative to heroin, but I'm sure it's illegal. In Indonesia, it was possible to buy imported alcohol, and some local breweries make a decent beer. But there's not much for sale and it's very heavily taxed. Most of the 85% of the populace who are Moslems are teetotalers, I was told. And of all the bunches of Moslems I ate with or saw eating, only one, a very Westernized international lawyer, drank any alcoholic beverage. However, I was also told that, if green coconuts sit around too long after picking, it was not uncommon to find that the liquid center, the "milk," had begun to ferment. That didn't sound like much to a guy who much admires Australian wines, so I passed.
