NDS: Improved, Supported -- Novell Smoothes Network Hardware Management, Sets Up New Division
Monua Janah

Novell's strategy of building up its directory services to be the core of a series of value-added products bore fruit last week. The company unveiled Java technology that lets Novell Directory Services manage network hardware, and added Cisco Systems to the list of vendors that support NDS.

Novell has also set up a new division, the Directory Enabled Applications Group, to sell rapidly deployable, add-on software that leverages NDS. It unveiled plans to ship two such applications; both will coexist with Microsoft products.

Network managers will be able to centralize and speed administration with the new Java agent demonstrated by Novell; it lets NDS act as the repository of information needed to configure or troubleshoot routers and switches. The agent communicates between NDS and these devices using technology such as Lightweight Directory Access Protocol extensions.

NDS can also act as the central data store for setting policies about allocating network bandwidth, and Cisco will provide interoperability between NDS and its policy- and network-management software. Cisco is already working with Microsoft on a version of its upcoming Active Directory, but the support for NDS adds to users' choices of directory services. Novell has similar deals with Lucent Technologies and Nortel Networks.

The Directory Enabled Applications Group will launch products code-named Curacao and Magellan in early 1999. Curacao will let users of Novell's messaging and collaborative-work software, GroupWise, support the Microsoft Outlook client. That's in addition to clients already supported, including the Win32 and Web-access clients. Magellan will have Web publishing, document management, and NDS network management and authentication for Microsoft Office 2000 users.

Tom Rhoton, director of product marketing for GroupWise, says applications sold by the new group will all dynamically adjust to users' specific needs, and will be easy to deploy. "Instead of providing monolithic, large applications, we are providing a buffet approach, where you can pick and choose pieces that you need," Rhoton says. He adds that the new division will be responsible for GroupWise and for the Z.E.N.works desktop-management suite.

At Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, a Los Angeles law firm, director of technology Eric Goldreich says Novell is "going down the right track" with the new applications. But his company is implementing another document-management solution, iManage from NetRight Inc., after waiting in vain for the feature in GroupWise. Says Goldreich, "It wasn't until GroupWise 5.5 (released in September) that they had anything like enterprisewide document-management capability robust enough for a large environment like ours."

Novell's NDS Strategy:

Directory Enabled: Applications Group

Will develop and sell rapidly deployable, add-on software, including Curacao and Magellan products due in early 1999.

Curacao: Will add support for Microsoft Outlook client, with GroupWise running on back end.

Magellan: Will provide Web publishing and NDS capabilities to Microsoft Office 2000 users.
